Training

In addition to training her own horses, Joslyn trains horses and ponies (11 H and larger) for others in the Santa Fe area. She bases her training on the ideas of John Lyons, using clear communication, understanding and repetition as the basis for training. Her techniques are calm, firm and straightforward, teaching the horses to trust and respect the handler and rider without pain or fear. Horses started by Joslyn are trusting, calm, brave, obedient and enjoyable to ride both in the ring and on the trail. While Joslyn's background is mostly in the English disciplines, she has started many horses in Western styles of riding. In all cases, the goal is for both horse and rider to have fun and be safe.

Ground Training:

Haltering, catching, lead training, tying, grooming, picking up feet, standing for farrier, hosing off, being sprayed, clipping, loading, accepting saddle and bridle (if 2+ years).

Starting Under Saddle:

Accepting saddle and bridle, accepting rider, standing for mounting, learning clear aids for halt, walk, trot, canter and turns. Joslyn believes that trail riding at the beginning of training is essential for the horse's exposure and attitude. The beginning of under-saddle education is spent largely on the trail, learning to be brave and to enjoy being ridden; once the horse has mastered being ridden on the trail, Joslyn works mostly in the ring to achieve mastery of the aids. This process may take as little as 10 days or as long as 2 months, depending on the horse and quality of ground training.

Solidifying the Basics:

Accepting stronger leg contact, stretching through the back, using the hindquarters, softening the neck and understanding light rein contact, gaining better balance at the trot and canter, gaining impulsion without rushing, bending, moving off the leg, achieving smooth transitions, smoothing directional changes, gaining an even tempo at each gait, working on circles and lines, working over ground poles. Many advanced horses and ponies need to return to the basics if they learn to evade aids and/or misbehave doing basic flatwork. This is especially relevant for ponies that are ridden exclusively by kids.

Finishing:

Once the horse has strong basics on the flat, she is ready to learn more advanced movements relevant to a particular discipline, as determined by the owner. Advanced skills include shortening and lengthening of strides, flying lead changes, jumping, learning distances to fences through gymnastics, achieving a head carriage and movement for dressage and/or hunters, leg yields, lateral movements, and much more.
